Rules and Guidelines

Competitors must wear race numbers provided on the outside of their clothing at all times except for the kayak. These will be standard race numbers that competitors will need to attach to their front using either pins or a race belt (recommended).

Any competitor who withdraws from the race MUST notify an official at the Race Finish line. This is an essential requirement to avoid unnecessary searches being conducted and emergency services being engaged.

It is the responsibility of all competitors to study all Course maps. Marshals or signs will be located at key junctions, but don't rely on them to get you around the course.

The Forestry Roads are open to other vehicle traffic.

Kayak Leg

The following crafts are permitted for the kayak leg; Sea Kayak (including sit on top), Multisport Kayak, Surf Ski, K1 and Stand-up Paddle Board

  • Wash hanging is permitted
  • Kayakers may be assisted into and out of their kayaks
  • Lifejackets/buoyancy aid or a PDF must be worn at all times on the water.
  • Paddlers need to be able to self-rescue in the event of capsize
  • A safety boat will be patrolling the kayak course
  • If you have been rescued on the water, you can either:
    • Be taken to the nearest beach and you can continue racing
    • Be taken to the kayak exit, whereby you must notify officials that you did not complete the kayak leg. You may hand over to your team mate who can continue the rest of the course. Your team will not be ranked or placed but you can still continue the event

Mountain Bike Leg

  • The Forestry Roads are open to other vehicle traffic
  • You must adhere to New Zealand road rules
  • Cyclists must wear an approved cycling helmet

Run Leg

  • All course marks must be followed – no short cuts
  • Runners may not be paced or have an escort
  • There are no drink-stations on the course – take adequate fluid

The organisers have sole discretion to alter or amend the race format or the rules in order to increase the safety of participants or for any other reason deemed appropriate.

Do not litter

We have been granted access to the forest by DOC to run this event so please respect the lake and forest. Anyone seen littering will be immediately disqualified.

Teams

All team members will have a race number. There is one transponder to be used by all team members. You must pass your timing transponder over to your next team member while in the transition area before you go across the timing mat.
Please secure it firmly, if it falls off your time will not be recorded.

Support Crews

The South Head Challenge has a central transition area so support crews are not mandatory. Support crews can help competitors get in and out of their kayaks at the water’s edge. And one crew member is allowed to assist you in transition.

Transition Areas

The transition areas will be open to drop kayaks off and setup your gear from 7.00am. Only competitors and one support crew member is permitted in the transition area.

Event Cancellation

In the unlikely event that we have to cancel the event due to severe weather conditions, we will notify all competitors on the morning of the event (before 7:00am) via the Event Website and Facebook Page. Severe weather conditions implies extreme weather where it is deemed unsafe to run the event
